ANTIQUE 18th CENTURY EDO ERA JAPANESE HAKARI BALANCE SCALE
A rare Edo era antique balance scale from Kyoto. This shape scale was made in the Edo era from the late 1500’s to the mid 1700’s. 6th to the mid 18th centuries. Yes, it’s that old The weight and container are both brass. The bar is bone. The brands on the wood case are brands verifying by the government that it is correct weight / scale. This was a precise, government regulated instrument. It’s been through a lot of owners. The stamp on the brass metal weight would have been a government stamp certifying it as being accurate. One thing unusual about this scale is it has three different scales. Three different pivot points with three reading on the bone shaft. We tried to show the three scale markings on the bone shaft in photos # 9 & 10. The three different pivot points whre the string was can be seen in photo # 11. The strings are old and two of them broke off. If this was to be used another. String would have to be pulled through. We’ve included an article from “Daruma” magazine (Spring 1995) about these weights. Daruma Magazine is an English language magazine based in the Kansai area of Japan and focuses exclusively on Japanese antiques. This is a complete antique scale in perfect condition.
