Japanese artists have always been enraptured by the color, celadon. Some of the most expensive and sought-after Asian vases are often in this color. This delightful vase has four sides, each panel with hand-painted insects and flowers. The background for the handpainting is embossed with a lattice effect that resembles honeycombs. One of the most unusual traits of this vase is the continuous bamboo-like edging that goes up and around each panel. The handpainting is of voluptuous flowers, wonderfully veined leaves and a bevy of insects that are alighting upon flowers or hovering above them. The colors blend harmoniously with the celadon green background. The scenes on all four panels are different from one another and exquisitely painted. The bottom of the vase has an incised oval seal. The condition is excellent. There is a glossy sealer that was used at the time of production that has wonderfully helped preserve the painting. There are no chips, cracks or staining. There are two minute kiln effects to the base. This is an exceptionally pretty piece of Asian art with its unusual shape, beautiful coloring, fine painting and attention to detail including the bamboo edging and honeycomb panels. It would make a charming addition to any room or collection. The vase came from a large private collection in the south of England. It measures 8 inches high, 2-¾ inches wide at the base and top and 3-¾ inches across at the widest point. Personal and cashier’s checks also accepted.
