We offer a late nineteenth century Japanese Kutani porcelain vase decorated with four white enameled chrysanthemums and two delicately painted butterflies upon a purple ground. The vase is ball shaped and supported by three legs. The neck collar and legs are decorated in red with gilt trim. The vase is artist signed on the base in red oxide characters. The vase weighs 11.4 ounces and measures 5 1/8″ in height and 5 1/2″ in width. The opening measures 1 1/4″ in diameter and the three legs measure 3/4″. As seen in the photographs, there is minor loss to a few of the thickly enameled flower petals. Overall the artist signed Kutani chrysanthemum vase is presented in very good antique condition free of chips, cracks, breaks or repairs. “Ueki(or Kamiki) do”. This is a seal from a kiln associated with the Kutani production area. It also includes the name of the maker, Ueki. Kaga was the name of an area with independent status during the Edo period. Its status designated that the area had more independence than a standard province. The seal using the characters for “Kaga Kuni” was mainly used during the later part of the Edo period up to the Meiji period around the end of the 19th century.
